The Scholarships
Herbert Smith Freehills wishes to award scholarships to outstanding law students to qualify as Hong Kong solicitors. Students will first study the Graduate Diploma in Law (“GDL”) at a recognised institution in the United Kingdom (
http://www.lawcabs.ac.uk/). Upon satisfactory completion of the GDL the students will be sponsored to study the Professional Certificate of Law (“PCLL”) at The University of Hong Kong, The City University of Hong Kong or The Chinese University of Hong Kong. After passing the PCLL, students will commence a two-year training contract at Herbert Smith Freehills Hong Kong (September 2018 – September 2020) which will lead to qualification as a Hong Kong solicitor. At the end of a two-year training period the candidate may be offered a permanent position in Herbert Smith Freehills‘ Beijing, Shanghai or Hong Kong office, subject to business need at the time.
Who Can Apply
You must have consistently outstanding academic achievements. You should also be a dynamic individual with an outstanding extra-curricular record. An excellent command of the English language (both written and spoken) is absolutely essential.
The scholarships are aimed at law students who wish to pursue a long term career with Herbert Smith Freehills.
Scholarship Awards Details
The scholarships require the successful students to commence the GDL at a recognised institution in the United Kingdom in September 2016 and commence the PCLL in Hong Kong in September 2017. After completing the PCLL, students must undertake a two year training contract at Herbert Smith Freehills‘ Hong Kong office.
The value of the award includes tuition fees and allowances for lodging, maintenance and books.
The award will include economy class air tickets at the beginning and at the end of the GDL and PCLL. The firm will also provide financial assistance for airfares, initial accommodation cost and the examination fees for preparing the PCLL conversion examination in Hong Kong.

Selection Process
